Since the dawn of day, dance music culture has displayed ankeennpreference for dark and enclosed spaces which shield andnprotectnthe dancing crowds from mundane realities. A club or andisco is notnsimply a type of event or a venue – it’s a powerful, nsubjectingncontext: „a chamber” that adjusts and reshapes anythingnthat entersnit for the night, from the audience, to the musicnitself, which, asndemonstrated by the post-techno movement, doesn’tnfeel pressured tonconform to the criteria of dancable music.

The audio visual collagists, VHS and vinyl worshippersnDemdikenStare will transform the Palladium concert hall into annoccultnritual ground for an hour, shamanistically manipulatingnwithncultural signs and enigmatic, yet intuitively graspable imagesnasnritual attributes: rhythm has, after all, always been essentialnfornthe human body to allow itself to fall into a trance.

The renowned producers Andy Stott and Shackleton willninviteneveryone to identify rhythm with motion, although not withn‘beat’,nwhile the Spanish project Evol will demolish dance music, nrevealingnunrecognisable psychedelically overreacted and rawncomponents. „Hownhas it become this?” is a question that this dancennight will trynto form answers to.

Andy Stott is one of this year’s Skaņu Mežs dance nightnU.K.nluminaries - with mini albums “Passed Me By” and “WenStaynTogether”, as well as the widely acclaimed “Luxury Problems”,nStottncombines low and beat barren rhythmical pulsations withnexpressivenelements forming both bright and unique sombre tones, nwhich havensolidified his fame of being an innovator of electronicnmusic withnunparalleled style.

The author of last year’s epic album ‘’LuxurynProblems’’,ndescribes his creative stance for the magazine ThenQuietus: “Fromnan artist’s perspective [...] when you’re makingnmusic, you’renputting your personality out there, you’re puttingnyour ideas outnthere, you’re putting dark shit from the back ofnyour mind outnthere. But that’s where I’m at, at the minute:nsomething reallynbeautiful. I prefer something that really meltsnyou.” Stott hasngrounded a reputation as an electronic musicninnovator and anone-of-a- kind stylist. The website Pitchforkncharacterises thenalbum “Luxury Problems” as a record which isn“delicate and gorgeousnbut has an undercurrent of menace.

Shackleton founded the legendary record label SkullnDiscontogether with colleague Appleblim. This label was for manynyears annindispensible part of the dubstep scene. The magazinenResidentnAdvisor writes about his music thus: “Shackleton’s loopyndrumnprogramming and ink-stained bass [...] are pushed tonpsychedelicnextremes. Rather than seeking a way out for his music, nhe found newnways to burrow deeper.” His latest musical outputn“Music for thenQuiet Hour/The Drawbar Organ EPs,” introducesnlighter elements intonhis music – for example uplifting organnthemes as well as morencolourful choices of texture. Demdike Stare is an audiovisual duet often mentionedninnconnection with the so-called renaissance of dark electronicnmusicnwhich has also touched the field of contemporary dance musicnin thenrecent years. In addition to being one of the most soughtnoutnprojects in its curious genre of occult electronica, DemdikenStarenis also undoubtedly the most original. This is possibly duento thenfact that both of the group’s members are seasoned vinylnrecordncollectors. Both musicians’ incredibly vast knowledge of mu-nsicnlets them create very precise moods, at times menacing, butnalwaysnsonorous. Info: www.modern-love.co.uk

Roc Jiménez de Cisneros is the founder of the project Evol.nDenCisneros lives and works in Barcelona, and his work is de-nscribednas an aesthetic study of algorithmic composition, and asnandeconstruction of rave culture. The “hoover sound” Evol usesnonnrecords and during performances, so characteristic to rave, nisngenerated by using a variety of computer compositionntechniques.nAesthetically this noise is converted into anclaustrophobic andnterrifyingly fun hyperbole. Evol is, perhaps, none of the mostnradical projects focused on the re-evaluation ofndance music.
